Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
